Silent Party Interlude

Fringe Description: Funny · Musical · Poetic

Devon Moore is a talented actor/singer/songwriter who had returned to Canada after years of traveling the world as an Ex-Pat. She returned home to settle down and get on with her life.  She enrolled in college and hated it in every way. She then obtained a job using the only skill that she has, bartending.  Moore points out that a bartender is just a high functioning alcoholic and apparently she was good at it.  She struggles to find a direction in her life but instead finds a gorgeous young man to hang out with, even though he was so much younger than her.

Moore then announces to her coworkers that she had registered herself in a 10 Day Silent Workshop – no speaking or gesturing or eye contact with others.  She mentions that she had never done anything like this and was not sure why she needed to go.

On a personal note the idea of a 10 day Silent Workshop is frightening to me – I like to talk – talk a great deal, the idea of remaining silent and not communicating for 10 days would be impossible to me – I would have trouble making it one hour.

The show is a mixture of stories and songs.  Moore plays the acoustic guitar and ukulele and performs entertaining original songs.  She takes us through the experience of the meditation, the silence, the food, the hunger, the people and the growth that she experienced over the 10 days.  The experience changed her, not in the way that she thought or wanted but definitely changed.  She shares with us the experience but doesn’t expand into what happened next or the lasting impact that it had.

The show is not earth changing and could be expanded upon to let us in to see the lasting impact of the silence. That said, this is a funny entertaining hour joining her on her adventure to silence…her adventure coming home.  Learning that looking for the finish line of the workshop or in life is a waste of time as truth is in the moment that is happening right now
