The Kevin Files: Direct Access Funding GONE

Author Name:
Andrew Templeton
PLANK Magazine has learned of at least two arts organizations who have had their funding from Direct Access (popularly known as “Gaming”) denied. The funding, the subject of an earlier freeze by the BC Government, had been a source of regular, core funding for both organizations. We have also learned that organizations which had moved to the recently implemented three-year cycle of funding through Direct Access have had this agreement cancelled and will now have to reapply.

Direct Access is one of the supporting pillars of cultural funding in British Columbia. It is unlikely that the withdrawing of funding that we’ve heard of are one offs. We believe that the cultural communities in BC need to prepare themselves for nuclear winter as far as funding goes.

They may also want to talk to their lawyers.

If you know of any companies that have had their funding withdrawn, please let us know in the comment section or – if you would prefer to be private – by e-mail to info [at] plankmagazine.com. We would like to keep track of the scale of this outrage.

As a final note: although this has nothing to do directly with Kevin Krueger, we will continue to mark our reports on the government’s cuts to funding as The Kevin Files. This is in recognition that Kevin is only the spokesman for the Government’s decisions as they affect arts and culture and not really the guy responsible. In this way Kevin stands more for a form of philistine behaviour than a single MLA.
